Education and Training
1. Compliance Computer Based Training (CBT) for UCSD Health Sciences Faculty,
Associate Staff Providers and Medical Billing Staff.
Compliance training for new physicians and associate staff providers is mandatory prior to submitting bills for professional fee services.
Effective June 28, 2004, the compliance CBT program replaces the 2-hour
face-to-face training sessions that were held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
UCSD Hillcrest and Thornton Medical Centers. The computer based training covers compliance program elements, fraud and abuse,
standards of business conduct, teaching physician billing and medical record documentation requirements
and other modules specific to coding. The compliance CBT program also
includes a HIPAA privacy module and post test so that newly hired faculty can
complete all of the required training elements via one site.

access instructions from your hiring department, please contact the UCSD

or telephone at (619) 471-9150. Once your UCSD affiliation has been
confirmed, access instructions will be sent to you via email.
2. Annual Coding Updates for Staff
An Annual CPT and ICD9 coding and training seminar for UCSD Healthcare employees
is held at the beginning of each calendar year. Training is geared towards staff who are responsible for abstracting and coding for physician services. Clinic nurse managers are also welcome.
The seminar is accredited by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (4
- 8 CEUs). Although there is no charge to UCSD Healthcare employees, pre-registration is required to ensure space.
3. "Lunch & Learn" Compliance Sessions for Coding Staff
Brief coding and compliance sessions are held throughout the year at UCSD
Medical Group Business Services. Training materials are based on coding scenarios and/or multiple choice tests. Attendance is optional.
4. "Physician In-Services"
The compliance staff offer on-going training sessions for physicians and
other associate staff providers in both general and specialty specific coding topics (CPT and ICD9). Please call the Compliance Office to schedule a training session or to discuss specific needs at (619) 471-9150 or e-mail Suzanne Forrest at

5. "ABCs About Billing and Compliance" Newsletter
The monthly compliance newsletter is distributed to all UCSD Healthcare physicians and professional fee coding staff.
